Garage Sale Trail began in 2010 when Sydney mates Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder dreamed up a community event in Bondi Beach called Sizzle. It was all about music, the coast and the environment.
On a whim, they added a secondhand sale with the tagline “Don’t dump it. Sell it.” — aiming for 30 garage sales. Instead, 130 popped up across Waverley Council. That was the spark that lit Garage Sale Trail.
Now...
Fast forward sixteen years and Garage Sale Trail has grown into a national movement proudly supported by over 120 local councils and three state governments - the NSW EPA, Green Industries SA and Queensland Government.
Our purpose is simple: to make secondhand second nature and in so doing protect mother nature’s precious, finite resources by giving the things we buy a longer life.
Over the years, the Trail has picked up environmental awards, been adopted by the UK Government and even seen garage sales at MONA in Tassie, NSW Parliament House, the WA Ballet and Opera Australia.
But the real magic happens in communities like yours, when neighbours, friends and strangers come together over two big weekends to buy, sell, reuse and share a good time.
16 Years of Community Impact
Together with millions of passionate hosts, bargain hunters, schools and local councils, Garage Sale Trail has achieved some truly extraordinary results:
- 4 million Australians have participated.
- 7.2 million pre-loved items have been given a second life.
- $52 million+ has been generated for households, charities and community groups.
- Millions of connections have been made over front yard chats, lawn barters and street parties.
2026 - The Last Hurrah!
Every great adventure has a final chapter. After 16 unforgettable years making secondhand second nature, 2026 marks our final ever event.
The Last Hurrah on 7–8 & 14–15 November 2026 is our national grand finale. A chance to go out on a high and celebrate everything this amazing community has built together.
Thank you to every host, shopper, council partner and team member who helped turn a simple idea into an iconic piece of Australian culture.

What’s next?
While Garage Sale Trail is hanging up its boots, our passion for local community action and environmental sustainability isn't going anywhere.
We are shifting our full focus toward our sister initiative, Grow It Local. A national movement dedicated to getting more people growing, sharing and eating locally grown food.
Just like Garage Sale Trail, Grow It Local is all about bringing neighbours together, building resilient communities and creating a greener, more sustainable future from the ground up.
